What is GMP?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice. It is not a single machine or test, but a system that ensures every product is made the same way, under control and traceable — from raw material to finished product.

What does GMP control?

  • Premises — factory layout, hygiene and environmental control
  • Equipment — suitable machines that are maintained and cleaned
  • Materials — receipt, storage and inspection of raw materials
  • Processes — defined production procedures that are followed
  • Documentation — batch records that make every product traceable
  • Staff — training and hygiene practices
  • Quality control — checks before products are released

Why does GMP matter to brand owners?

The name on the bottle is yours. If a batch has a problem, your brand bears the consequences. A GMP certified factory has systems to prevent problems and records to trace the cause if one occurs. In Malaysia, the manufacture of registered products such as traditional products is overseen by the regulatory authority, and GMP is part of that requirement.

Questions to ask when choosing an OEM factory

  • Is the factory GMP certified for my product category?
  • Is the factory halal certified?
  • Can the factory help with NPRA product registration?
  • How is quality control carried out before products are handed over?
